As exciting as it is to start a new year, it is also a time of great anxiety and fear.

Push play to hear my three tips on helping your child cope with bullies.

Coping skills are the greatest gift a parent can offer their children. As much as you want to, you will not be able to protect them from everything. Please watch for more information...

Here are my three tips to help your child use their voice against bullying!

1. USE YOUR WORDS

It is so difficult to speak up about being bullied. Show your child the various ways they can use their voice to stop bullying.

  • WRITE : words have power whether they are spoken or written. Tell your child they have every right to write to you, their teacher, their principal, their friends, and even their bully.

  • SPEAK UP: Your child can stand up for someone else who is being bullied. Two voices are stronger than one voice, even if it belongs to a bully.

2. SOLDIER OF SUPPORT

It takes a village to raise a strong voice.

Write a list of safe people your child can contact when they need support. Include family, friends, and people from your community. Include phone numbers and e-mails, and let your "Soldiers of Support" know they are on this list.

3. HUMOR

In my high school presentations about bullying I often show them President Obama reading "Mean Tweets" about himself on the Jimmy Kimmel show.

We all get bullied, it's just a matter of understanding one persons opinion does not have to be our truth.
